There are hundreds of TV and radio channels from around the world accessible with a set-top box and small satellite antenna, a bulk of which broadcast free-to-air, ie they cost you nothing - meaning no monthly fees or contracts. There are several options for receiving international satellite services, one is a free-to-air set-top box with a dish aligned to Astra 1, another is with a dish aligned to Hot Bird. Both Astra 1 and Hot Bird can be received on a one dish 'dual feed system', this comprises of a dish with two LNBs, with a switching devise which your set-top box automatically controls.
Astra 1 typically provides around 350 TV channels and 300 radio stations, mainly from continental Europe, such as Germany, France, The Netherlands, Spain and Italy. Hot Bird provides a broader range of around 700 TV channels and 525 radio stations, from territories including: Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America.
With satellite reception you will typically find not just 1 or 2 services offered in your favoured language, but in many cases the channel choice can stretch into its hundreds. The satellite services receivable in the UK are also typically the same as used domestically in the home countries, ie you can be offered the same channel choice as someone is enjoying in Italy, Germany or Spain for example.
The most popular option for satellite reception is the installation of a motorised system that will receive transmissions from many of the satellites which broadcast to europe. By having a small 80cm dish on this set up it is possible to receive reception from more than 15 different satellites (as long as you have a clear view of the satellites, e.g. no interference from trees, other buildings etc).
